Playwright -
Caryl Churchill
Caryl Churchill (b. Sept. 3 1938) is a British playwright who began her writing career in university where her earliest plays were produced. Churchill is notable for her vast body of work in radio, theatre, and television (49 stage plays as of September 2021). Many of these works, like Love and Information, feature Churchill’s non-naturalist style (which I discuss more in depth on the "Churchill’s Theatre” page). The strong feminist themes and contemporary political conflicts featured in her plays echo socialist sentiments popularized by political movements from her youth. Churchill herself is a private writer and rarely grants interviews.
"We never talked about feminism, for example. It was just there. Caryl's view was always that the plays would speak for themselves. Which, as you know, is also the attitude that she takes to interviews." - John Tydeman, former head of BBC Radio for The Guardian [link to online article "Caryl Churchill, by the people who know her best"]
